By 2030, one in five Americans will be over the age of 65. This massive shift in the country’s demographics will put new pressures on the healthcare system, which will have to reconsider many aspects of care delivery. This includes where seniors and elderly parents live…how seniors live…and how seniors die.

Some statistics for today…

– Two-thirds of people over 65 have multiple chronic conditions
– Primary care physicians and geriatricians most experienced in meeting these care needs are already in short supply
– Nine out of 10 Americans say they would prefer to die at home
– However, nearly 70% die in hospitals or long-term care facilities

Many older adults rely on an informal network of family and friends. But according to AARP, the number of informal caregivers is also expected to decline from a ratio of 7:1 in 2010 to 4:1 by 2030.

Is there a way to ensure that our community seniors, and elderly parents, receive compassionate, patient-centered care? Are there enough caregivers for the aging population?

Every family is unique. Health profiles, living arrangements, financial resources all differ. I encourage an open, honest conversation with your elderly parents. How do they envision their future? Are they prepared for aging, illness? Do they want to live out their years in their current home?

Sometimes, home care services can provide the answers. With compassionate care staff, seniors can remain active, safe, comfortable in their homes. And do so with a degree of socialization which addresses the loneliness and isolation experienced by many aging adults. We believe “home care is the best care.”
